On the PGA Tour this week, one of the majors that has been coming up for a while. This is the U.S. Open, possibly the most famous professional golf tournament in the world. It will happen at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, California, from the 14th of June to the 17th. This tournament has an $8,000,000 purse and will also offer 600 FedEx Cup points to the players. The defending champion for this event is Rory McIlroy, who walked away last year with the grand prize of $1,440,000. The next tournament is the CVS Caremark Charity Classic.
The last tournament that has been completed was the FedEx St. Jude Classic,and it was held from the 7th to the 10th of June, and won by Dustin Johnson. Rory McIlroy is the defending champion for this tournament, and some say the best golfer in the world. There are 155 other players that will be participating in the U S Open Championship and they include Graeme McDowell, Lucas Glover, Tiger Woods and Geoff Ogilivy, as well as Retief Goosen, Jim Furyk, Angel Cabrera and also Bubba Watson, Trevor Immel man and Phil Mickelson.

First, before we get into anything else, let's check out the course for this year's US Open tournament. The event will be held in the state of California in Pebble Beach, and the venue is the Pebble Beach Golf Links. It's a total of 7,040 yards and is rated at a Par 71 for difficulty. This west coast course has been around since 1919, and was designed by Jack Neville and Douglas Grant. The course opened on February 22nd and has been the venue for the US Open Championship four time prior to this, the first time in 1972, won by Jack Nicklaus.
Besides Nicklaus, the tournament has a solid history of champion golfers that have won this major. They include Willie Anderson, Bobby Jones and Ben Hogan, all three of which – along with Jack Nicklaus – have won the United States Open Championship four different times. Other past winners include Tiger Woods and Hale Irwin, both of which have three wins, as well as John McDermott, Billy Casper, Andy North, Lee Trevino and Ernie Els. The most recent champion was Lucas Glover, who won his first major trophy at Bethpage State Park last year.
Let's take a closer look at last year's tournament. It was held in Farmington, New York at Bethpage State Park Golf Course and the dates were June 18th through the 22nd. Lucas Glover was the big winner of this Major, ending with a final of 276 (−4). The second placers were Ricky Barnes, David Duvall and Phil Mickelson all with a two under. That made the first and second place winners of the tournament, a combined four in all, Americans. However, Ross Fisher stepped in and took fifth place for England with a one under Par.
The field for the US Open include 75 players who will receive exemptions and there are a total of 156 players scheduled to be on the field. 61 of those places will be filled up with qualifying.
