The Players Championship Live

The tournament course is 7215 yards and is a Par 72. The longest hole is the 583 yard Par 5, number nine hole. The shortest is hole 17, a Par 3 and only 137 yards. The 2009 winner was Henrik Stenson who had a total a 276 when it was all over. Ian Poulter came in second place and John Mallinger and Kevin Na were tied for third. Jim Furyk from the United States tied for fifth place with two other players, Brian Davis and Ben Crane. This is going to be an exciting PGA Tour event with lots of great golfers participating.

As for the field this year, we know that Tiger Woods will be attending, taking 8^th place in last year's tournament. He announced that he would be attending on Wednesday saying that it was one of the bestfields and a tournament everyone wants to win. Also on the list of attendees is Padraig Harrington, Henrik Stenson, Stewart Cink, Steve Stricker, Bob Estes, Kevin Na and Sergio Garcia. The PGA tour continues Thursday with The Player's Championship 2009 being played on the 7,220 yard course at Ponte Vedra Beach in Florida. The purse is a whopping 9.5 million dollars with the winner taking home 1.71 million of that. The tournament is played at the TPC at Sawgrass which was opened in 1980. The Player's Championship is the PGA Tour's flagship event.

Sergio Garcia from Spain is the defending champion. The 29 year-old has had eight PGA Tour wins and won worldwide fame in 1999 when he battled Tiger Woods in the PGA Championship and eventually took second place.  

The other top five last year were Paul Goydos, who came in second and has had 2 PGA Tour wins, American Jeff Quinney who turned pro in 2001, and fourth and fifth were taken by Briny Baird and Stephen Ames.

The tournament will be played May 7^th through the 10^th and will feature players such as Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. Tiger won the Quail Hollow tournament is 2007, but couldn't return the following year because of surgery for either the Quail Hollow or The Player's events. Other players that will be joining Woods and Mickelson are Master's Champion Angel Cabrera, as well as Anthony Kim, Vijay Singh, Jim Furyk and Padraig Harrington. Defending champion Sergio Garcia will also be playing.
