The PGA Tour will be moving to Memphis this week for the FedEx St Jude Classic 2014, which is the last tournament on the PGA calendar before the second major of the year, the US Open. While many players will be moving to Pinehurst to start practicing for the major, a few big names on the circuit such as Phil Mickelson, Matt Kuchar, Zach and Dustin Johnson will be on the field in Memphis for the FedEx St Jude Classic 2014. The TPC Southwind, where the tournament will be played is 7239 yards long par 70 course. There is plenty of water around the greens which the field will have to avoid. There are heavy rains and wind forecasted for this week which will reflect on the outcome of the St Jude Classic when it comes to a close.
The tournament has a total purse of $5.8 million with 500 FedEx Cup points for the winner of the tourney. Harris English is the defending champion here although his recent form has not been something to boast about. English has failed to make the Top 10 at any tournament since February 23. Mickelson came in a close second last time around and will try to do one better this time. The leftie has been in the news for the wrong reasons off late, however, he remains a strong contender on the field and will try to warm up for the US Open with a win at the St Jude Classic.

One of the events with the longest traditions on the PGA Tour is happening June 8th through the 14th. It's the St. Jude Classic from the TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee and the primary beneficiary of this prestigious tournament is of course St. Jude's Children's Research Center and Hospital. New this year, is the partnership with Cellular South, who has agreed to donate $1000 to St. Jude's for every eagle made throughout the tournament. With the caliber of golfers on the field, Cellular South will be donating quite a bit of money before this tournament is over.
This year's field includes Phil Mickelson, who committed to playing in the tournament on Friday, after announcing recently that he would take a break from the PGA Tour, due to his wife, Amy, being diagnosed with breast cancer nearly four weeks ago. She is undergoing surgery soon, but Mickelson decided to play in the meantime, a first for Mickelson since 2001, since he will be missing other tournaments due to the surgery, including the U.S. Open. Other notable players taking the field this year are Justin Leonard, defending his 2008 title, Henrik Stenson, Camilo Villegas, Sergio Garcia, John Daly and Padraig Harrington.
The TPC Southwind in Memphis is 7,244 yard course that is listed as a par 70, and is one of the most inviting courses in the country, with the final hole featuring a water hazard on the first two shots, and fairway bunkers on the right. Over the years some of the best golfers in the world have played on this course including Fred Haas, the tournaments first winner in 1945, Jack Nicklaus in 1965, Lee Trevino in 1971, beating four runners up by 4 points, and more recently Justin Leonard in 2008, with Robert Allenby and Trevor Immelman as runners-up. Leonard also won in 2005, and the 2007 runner up was Brian Davis with Woody Austin taking home the trophy for that year.
These golfers will be playing for a total purse of $5.8 Million dollars, with over $1,000,000 going to the winner. There are also 500 FedEx points up for grabs and it's going to be a very exciting tournament this year. Can Justin Leonard successfully defend his title, or will Stenson, Garcia, Daly, Harrington or Mickelson step up and take it away.
