Tom Watson Impresses at the British Open while Tiger Woods Struggles

Tiger WoodsTime has been turned back at the British Open. 32 years after a memorable battle at Turnberry between Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, Watson has come out surging again at the major golf tournament. Even if he only stays near the top of the leader board for a day, it was still a remarkable and inspiring day for the 59 year old veteran.

Tom Watson jumped all over the unusually nice weather conditions and shot a sparkling 5 under 65. He held the lead for the majority of the day until Miguel Angel Jimenez rained on his parade with a delightful 64, which is only one shot away from the record for the lowest score for any major golf championship.

Aside from Watson and Jimenez it was a very unusual day for Tiger Woods as he struggled on the day and was one of the few top golfers to finish over par. He shot a +1 71 and will need to be at his best for the rest of the weekend in order to challenge the current leaders. It was a day when all the top names were able to pull out surprisingly low scores but Tiger struggled from the get go.

Aside from the big names Ben Curtis and Kenichi Kuboya also finished at 5 under and are tied with Watson after the first day. Mike Weir finished with an impressive 3 under par and there is quite a log jam at the top of the leader board.

The nice weather will not last long and the tournament will start to look like the British Open that we are all used to. The forecasters are calling for showers for the rest of the weekend and dark clouds are rolling in fast. Maybe it is that sort of weather that Tiger Woods needs to get back on his game. One thing is for sure though. It will be interesting to see Watson try to compete and would be a historic victory if he could pull off a win. One he would surely dedicate to his retired friend, Jack Nicklaus.
