Tiger Woods Claims Yet Another Championship at the AT and T National

Hunter MahanTiger Woods was at it again this weekend as he came away with his 68th career PGA victory, but there was something a little different about this victory. As Tiger clutched the silver trophy for the AT & T National he took a moment to interview the winner, seeing as he was the host for the tournament. The thing is, that Woods was in fact the winner and the host of the tournament which is something he has always wanted to accomplish. Heading into the final Sunday Woods was challenged quite hard but worked his way along the back nine and finished off the day with an impressive birdie on the 16th and a 67 on the day. He was just barely able to hold off Hunter Mahan after his performance where he pulled out a 62.

“It was great shaking my own hand today”, was one of the quotes Woods had a chuckle over after the tournament. This was the second time he hosted the tournament and one of his main goals was to win a tournament and be a “greedy host”. He held off a late charge from both Mahan and Anthony Kim in front of a very partisan crowd of 40,000. Once he strode to the cup after his 20 foot birdie on the 16th it seemed that he and the fans all knew that he would walk away with the victory. He closed it out with three straight pars and once again proved that he is the best golfer in the world, and maybe the best golfer ever.

Even though Mahan was disappointed that he couldn’t close it out in Tiger like fashion, the tournament was a building block for him. He managed to nail down six birdies on the back nine alone and was in position for the victory until Woods came on in the last hour of the tournament. While Kim was in position the entire tournament he just could not keep up on the last day of the event. Kim shot a 71 on the last day to slip all the way back to third and was unable to defend his championship from last year. All in all it seemed like just another walk in the park for Woods as he remains ranked as the world no. 1 in the PGA.
