Steve Stricker Wins Northern Trust Open

Steve StrickerSteve Stricker was the clear favourite heading into the final round of the Northern Trust Open, but it was his calm and careful play that finally gave him the victory. While Stricker had built up a 6 shot lead over the course of the tournament, he spent the final day simply trying not to shoot any bogeys rather than swat the ball right at the flag as he had done earlier in the tourney. Stricker noted that he had no interest in breaking the course record and was instead just trying not to set a record by blowing such a large lead on the final day.

With all that said, the day ended as everyone expected to with Steve Stricker pulling off a two shot victory over Luke Donald, although it looked like he might blow out thanks to his scared play throughout the day. Thankfully for him, he pulled out back to back birdies at the turn which really settled him down and got him back on his game.

This is the 4th victory for Stricker in his last fifteen tournaments and he has now moved all the way up to second spot in the world rankings. After his 8th career victory he could not even make it through the post-tourney interview as he was overcome with joy and tears. HE was overcome as the memories swept over him about his loss of his PGA card just 4 years ago.

His struggles in the final round brought back all of those memories, especially after his lead was cut in half after just 4 holes on Sunday.

In the end Stricker finished with a -16 and earned over $1 million dollars, which bumped his career totals to over $25 million. Not bad for a guy that lost his PGA card once before.
