Location for the 2013 Solheim Cup Announced

Alison NicolasEvery two years is the LPGA Solheim Cup, which is the equivalent to the Ryder Cup in the men's tournament. Twelve professional golfers are selected to participate from the United States, as well as twelve from Europe. The LPGA announced recently the the Solheim Cup for 2013 will be held at the Colorado Golf Club, in Parker, Colorado which is a town near Denver. The tournament falls on this year, and will be held at Rich Harvest Farms in the town of Sugar Grove, Illinois.

This year's tournament will take place on August 21st through 23rd, and the teams were already announced, following the Women's British Open last Sunday, and the Captains for this year are Beth Daniel and Alison Nicolas. The tournament name comes from the golf club manufacturer Karsten Solheim, who was one of those responsible for the Cup's creation. The first was held in 1990, and until 2002 it was held on the even years, with alternated it with the years that the Ryder Cup was being held. However, when the Ryder Cup was postponed until 2001, the Solheim Cup was reshuffled to odd numbered years starting in 2003.

The tournament will be held between the Colorado Golf Club in 2013 and this year's tournament at Rich Harvest Farms at Killeen Castle Golf Resort in Ireland. Previous to that it was held at Halmstad in Sweden, with Betsy King and Nelen Afredsson captaining, and at the Crooked Stick Golf Club in Indian in 2005. In 2003, the tournament was Captained by Patty Sheehan and Catrin Nilsmark at the Barseback G & CC, and then it was held in 2002, being the time that the tournament switched from even numbered years to odd. The very first Solheim Cup was held at Lake Nona Golf and Country Club, in Orlando Florida in 1990, and was captained by Kathy Whitworth and Mickey Walker
