Heath Slocum Wins Over Star Studded Field

Padriag HarringtonHeath Slocum wins the Barclay's Open on Sunday, by just one shot, with the pack with him every step. The pack being Tiger Woods, Steve Stricker, Padriag Harrington and Ernie Els, at the final round of the Barclays, with no wins since 2005, and on the end of the qualifying list. In fact, the second to last to qualify. Slocum had a more than 20 foot putt that got him Par on hole 72, and then made a 158 yard seven iron shot that earned him an eagle, and was able to move above the stars that were competing with him and earn himself a victory at this event.

This is the first event of the $65 million dollar FedEx Cup Playoffs, and Slocum takes home a $1.35 million dollar chunk of that, as well as having a spot in the final. That means that he also gets to compete in next year's U.S. Open, The Masters, British Open and PGA Championship. This from a guy that was teeing off with only two career wins. Slocum called the last shot magical, and had planned on heading to the European Tour if he hadn't qualified for this year's playoffs. But qualify he did, and whether by skill, divine intervention or sheer luck, also has a major win under his belt.

Slocum leaves the Liberty National to go onto the Deutsche Bank Championship, where he is only behind Woods and Stricker for the $10 million dollar FedEx Cup Grand Prize. The top 100 move onto Norton, Massachusetts for the second playoff event on Friday, where the cut will go down to seventy, for the BMW Championships. From there, the top thirty of those that are left will move onto Atlanta for the Tour Championship. Those who were cut from this round include Ben Curtis, Mark Clacavecchia, Adam Scott and K.J. Choi.
