The PGA European Tour 2009 is The Elite Tour for tournament golfers in Europe, with the biggest money events taking place in the U.K., Ireland, Germany, France and Spain. The first event on the tour took place in November, won by Sergio Garcia for his 8th European Tour win. The next tournament was the Hong Kong Open, also played by the Asian Tour, and that was followed by the Sportsbet Australian Masters in late November.
South Africa hosted the next event, won by Richard Sterne, called the Alfred Dunhill Championship. Sterne also won the following South Africa Open, for his fifth European Tour win. On January 8th, Anders Hansen won the 2009 Joberg Open, which was hosted by South Africa as well.
The European tour had three co-sanctioned events with the Asian Tour in January, The canceled Indian Masters, The Malaysia Open and The Johnnie Walker Classic, which was surprisingly won by a golfer who had just earned his pro status a few months previous – Danny Lee.
In March, Phil Mickelson took home the title and prize money in the World Golf Championships, which were held place in the States, with the Estoril Open at the beginning of April, won by Irish Golfer Michael Hoey, which was hosted by Portugal. Directly after that came the first Pro Golf Major, with The Master's Tournament. Angel Cabrera took home the title and a whole bunch of extra points for winning the Masters, which took place on April 9th through the 12th.
The Ballantine's took place on the 23rd - 26th of April, with Thongchai Jaidee winning the tournament, and springing himself into the top position on the Asian Tour's Order of Merit Standings. The most recent event on the European Tour was the BMW Italian Open, won by Daniel Vancsik from Argentina.
Currently, Geoff Ogilvy is in first place on the leaderboard, with nearly 1.5 million in prize money so far, with England's Paul Casey close behind, and Angel Cabrera in third with just over one million dollars won so far. The next event takes place on May 14th, in Ireland as players battle it out in the Irish Open.
