The Telkom Championship is also known as the South African PGA Championship is part of a triple crown that includes the South Africa Open, held in December and began in 1903 and the South Africa Masters, which began in 1960 and is held at the Wild Coast Sun Country Club in Eastern Cape, South Africa, as well as the South Africa PGA Championship, which is now titled after the sponsor and called the Telkom Championship. The purse for this event is R2,500,000 which comes out to be just under $325,000 US dollars.

The South African Triple Crown has only been won by three golfers. Ernie Els, Bobby Locke and Gary Player. South African Jaco Van Zyl will try to defend his title this year and the tournament has been won by South Africans non stop since 2007, with Louis Oosthuizen winning both the 2007 and 2008 titles.
